3-Ingredient Cool Whip Candy

  • Author: twiza amys

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips, approximately 12 ounces
  • 1 container (8 ounces) Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed and cold
  • 12 ounces chocolate melting wafers, for coating

Instructions

Step 1: Melt the Chocolate Chips

Place the semisweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20–30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval until the chocolate is mostly melted.

Continue stirring until the remaining pieces melt from the residual heat. The chocolate should be smooth and glossy, not hot enough to burn your finger if you accidentally touch the outside of the bowl.

Let the chocolate cool for a few minutes before adding the whipped topping. If the chocolate is too hot, it may melt the Cool Whip and create a thin mixture that takes much longer to set.

You can also melt the chocolate using a double boiler. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, making sure the bowl does not touch the water. Stir until smooth and remove from the heat.

Step 2: Fold in the Cool Whip

Make sure the Cool Whip is thawed and cold before beginning this step.

Add a small portion of the Cool Whip to the melted chocolate and gently stir to loosen the mixture. Then add the remaining whipped topping in two or three additions, folding with a silicone spatula until the mixture is evenly combined.

At first, the chocolate may become thicker or look slightly uneven. Continue folding gently until the mixture becomes a uniform chocolate color with no large streaks of whipped topping remaining.

Avoid vigorous mixing because you want to keep the mixture as light as possible while ensuring that the chocolate is evenly distributed.

The finished filling should be thick and creamy. If it seems soft, do not worry immediately; chilling will help it firm up.

Step 3: Chill the Chocolate Mixture

Line an 8-inch square pan or another shallow container with parchment paper, leaving a little overhang on the sides to make removal easier.

Spread the chocolate mixture evenly into the pan. Smooth the top with a spatula, then cover the pan and refrigerate for approximately 3–4 hours, or until the filling is firm enough to cut cleanly.

For a firmer filling, you can refrigerate it overnight. Avoid leaving the mixture uncovered in the refrigerator for extended periods because it may absorb odors or dry out on the surface.

The filling should feel firm when gently pressed but remain creamy when eaten. If it is still too soft to cut, give it more time to chill.

Step 4: Cut the Candy into Pieces

Lift the chilled filling from the pan using the parchment paper. Place it on a clean cutting board and use a sharp knife to cut it into small squares.

For neat pieces, wipe the knife with a warm, dry cloth between cuts. If the filling starts softening while you work, return it to the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes.

You can also roll small portions into balls if you prefer a truffle-style appearance. Work quickly and keep the remaining filling cold so it holds its shape.

Place the cut pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet and refrigerate them for another 15–20 minutes before dipping. Cold pieces are easier to coat and less likely to fall apart in the melted chocolate.

Step 5: Dip in Chocolate and Let Set

Place the chocolate melting wafers in a clean microwave-safe bowl. Heat in short intervals, stirring between each one, until the coating is completely melted and smooth.

Using a fork or dipping tool, lower one chilled candy piece into the chocolate. Turn it gently to coat all sides, then lift it out and allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.

Transfer the coated candy to the parchment-lined tray. Repeat with the remaining pieces, reheating the coating gently if it begins to thicken.

For decoration, drizzle a little extra melted chocolate over the tops before the coating sets. This is optional and does not require an additional ingredient if you reserve a small amount of the coating chocolate.

Refrigerate the candies until the outer shell is firm, usually about 20–30 minutes. Store the finished candies in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Notes

Let the melted chocolate cool slightly. Chocolate that is too hot can deflate or melt the whipped topping, making the filling too soft.

Fold rather than beat. Gentle folding helps combine the ingredients without unnecessarily removing the air from the whipped topping.

Chill long enough. The filling must be firm before cutting. If the pieces crumble or stick heavily to the knife, they probably need more refrigeration.

Keep the candy cold while dipping. Work in small batches and leave the remaining pieces in the refrigerator.

Use chocolate melting wafers for the coating. They are designed for dipping and often produce a smoother finish than ordinary chocolate chips.

Keep moisture away from melted chocolate. Water can cause chocolate to seize and become grainy. Make sure all bowls and utensils are completely dry.

Avoid overheating. Heat chocolate in short intervals and stir frequently. Gentle heating produces a smoother coating and helps prevent scorching.

Remember that the center stays soft. This candy has a creamy, truffle-like texture rather than the firm bite of traditional hard candy.
