Sweet Potato Pie Recipe – Classic Creamy Southern Homemade Dessert

  • Author: iliass

Description

Sweet Potato Pie is a timeless Southern dessert that brings warmth, comfort, and rich flavor to every table. Known for its smooth, velvety texture and perfectly balanced spices, this pie is often compared to pumpkin pie—but many would argue it’s even better. Made with naturally sweet, roasted sweet potatoes, warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and a buttery flaky crust, this dessert is a true celebration of simple ingredients transformed into something extraordinary.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 23 medium sweet potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Step 1:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Wash, peel, and boil or roast the sweet potatoes until tender. Mash them until smooth with no lumps and allow them to cool slightly.

Step 2:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes with melted butter. Stir until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Step 3:
Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated and the filling is silky.

Step 4:
Pour the sweet potato mixture into the prepared pie crust. Smooth the top evenly using a spatula.

Step 5:
Bake in the preheated oven for 50–60 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the pie cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For the best flavor, roasting sweet potatoes instead of boiling them enhances their natural sweetness and prevents excess moisture. Avoid overmixing the filling, as it can incorporate too much air and affect the texture. If the crust begins to brown too quickly, cover the edges with foil.
