Description
Made with sweetened condensed milk, this homemade loaf has an incredibly tender crumb, a delicate sweetness, and a beautiful golden top. The condensed milk doesn’t just add sweetness—it also gives the bread a richer texture and makes every slice wonderfully soft.
Ingredients
For the Bread
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Egg Wash
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Optional Finish
- 1–2 tablespoons melted butter
- A light drizzle of sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
Pour the warm milk into a large mixing bowl.
The milk should be warm but not hot—around 105–110°F (40–43°C).
Add the sugar and active dry yeast.
Stir gently and allow the mixture to sit for approximately 5–10 minutes.
You should see a light layer of foam forming on top.
This indicates that the yeast is active.
If the mixture doesn’t foam at all, check your yeast before continuing.
Step 2: Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the sweetened condensed milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Whisk until everything is well combined.
The mixture should look smooth and creamy.
The condensed milk provides both sweetness and richness, so there’s no need to add a large amount of additional sugar.
Step 3: Add the Dry Ingredients
Add approximately 3 cups of the flour along with the salt.
Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula.
Continue adding the remaining flour gradually until a soft dough forms.
You may not need every last bit of flour depending on the humidity and the size of your measuring cups.
The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky rather than dry.
Step 4: Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface.
Knead for approximately 8–10 minutes.
You can also use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook and knead on low to medium speed for approximately 6–8 minutes.
The dough should become smooth, elastic, and soft.
To test it, gently stretch a small piece of dough between your fingers. It should stretch thinly before tearing.
If the dough is extremely sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time.
Avoid adding too much flour because it can make the finished bread dense.
Step 5: First Rise
Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl.
Turn it once so the surface is lightly coated.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
Place it somewhere warm and allow it to rise for approximately 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
The exact rising time depends on your kitchen temperature.
Step 6: Shape the Bread
Once the dough has doubled, gently press it down to remove excess air.
Transfer it to your work surface.
For a classic loaf, shape the dough into a smooth log and place it into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
You can also divide the dough into several equal pieces and arrange them side-by-side in the loaf pan for a pull-apart style bread.
Step 7: Second Rise
Cover the loaf loosely with a clean towel.
Allow it to rise again for approximately 30–45 minutes.
The dough should become noticeably puffy and rise close to the top of the pan.
Don’t rush this step because the second rise helps create the soft, airy texture.
Step 8: Prepare the Egg Wash
Whisk together:
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Gently brush the mixture over the surface of the risen dough.
This gives the finished bread a beautiful golden-brown appearance.
Step 9: Bake
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the bread for approximately 30–35 minutes.
The top should be golden brown.
If the top begins browning too quickly, loosely cover it with aluminum foil during the final part of baking.
The internal temperature should be around 190°F (88°C) when the bread is fully baked.
Step 10: Add the Finishing Touch
Remove the bread from the oven.
While it’s still warm, brush the top with melted butter.
For an extra indulgent finish, you can drizzle a small amount of sweetened condensed milk over the top once the loaf has cooled slightly.
Allow the bread to rest in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.
Step 11: Cool and Slice
Let the loaf cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Use a serrated bread knife to cut clean slices.
If you can resist eating it while it’s still warm, you’ll notice that the texture becomes even softer and more structured as it cools.

Notes
The most important thing when making homemade bread is not adding too much flour.
The dough should be soft and slightly tacky before kneading. As you knead, the gluten develops and the dough becomes smoother and easier to handle.
The temperature of the milk also matters. Milk that’s too hot can damage or kill the yeast.
Another important step is allowing enough time for both rises. Don’t rely only on the clock. Instead, look at the dough.
During the first rise, it should roughly double in size.
During the second rise, the shaped loaf should become noticeably puffy.
