Southern Pecan Pie Dump Cake

🍰 Southern Pecan Pie Dump Cake

  • Author: iliass
  • Total Time: 1 hour

Description

Southern Pecan Pie Dump Cake is a rich, comforting, and indulgent dessert that combines the deep flavors of traditional pecan pie with the simplicity of a classic dump cake. This recipe is a Southern favorite because it removes all the complicated steps of pie-making while still delivering that signature caramelized pecan flavor and buttery texture.

Ingredients

Scale

🍯 Pecan Pie Filling Layer:

  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup (or honey as alternative)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt

🍰 Cake Layer:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (extra for topping)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional for warmth)

🍫 Optional Add-ins:

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup caramel bits or toffee pieces

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare Pan

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray. This step is important because the dessert becomes sticky and rich once baked, and proper greasing helps with easy serving later.

Step 2: Make the Pecan Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, melted butter, corn syrup, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk everything until smooth, glossy, and fully blended.

Fold in the chopped pecans so they are evenly coated in the sweet mixture. This creates the signature pecan pie base that gives the dessert its deep caramel flavor.

Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly across the bottom.

Step 3: Add the Cake Mix Layer

Take the dry yellow cake mix and sprinkle it evenly over the pecan mixture. Do NOT stir or mix.

Make sure the cake mix covers the entire surface as evenly as possible. This dry layer will transform into a soft cake topping while baking.

Step 4: Add Butter and Extra Pecans

Drizzle the melted butter slowly and evenly across the cake mix layer. Try to cover as much surface as possible to ensure even browning.

Sprinkle extra chopped pecans on top for crunch and flavor. If desired, add cinnamon or chocolate chips at this stage for extra richness.

Step 5: Bake to Perfection

Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.

The center should be slightly soft and gooey, while the top becomes lightly crisp and golden. Remove from oven and let it cool for at least 20–30 minutes before serving so it sets properly.

Notes

  • Do not stir the layers after assembling—this is essential for the dump cake texture.
  • Ensure butter is evenly distributed for a golden crust.
  • The center will look soft when done but will firm up as it cools.
  • Overbaking will dry out the filling, so watch carefully during the last 10 minutes.
  • Letting it rest is crucial for clean slices.
