Ingredients

Scale

🍫 For the Cake

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

🥥 For the Coconut Pecan Layer

  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1½ cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1½ cups chopped pecans
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

🍫 For the Chocolate Layer

  • 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips

🧈 For the Butter Topping

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, sliced into thin pats

🍨 Optional Garnishes

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Toasted pecans
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Chocolate shavings

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2: Prepare the Cake Batter

In a large bowl combine:

  • German chocolate cake mix
  • Milk
  • Melted butter
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla

Beat until smooth.

Pour evenly into the prepared baking dish.

Step 3: Add the Chocolate Layer

Sprinkle evenly over the batter:

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Milk chocolate chips

Step 4: Prepare the Coconut Pecan Layer

In a bowl combine:

  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Coconut
  • Pecans
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon (optional)

Mix well.

Carefully spoon the mixture evenly over the cake batter.

Do not stir.

Step 5: Add the Butter

Place thin slices of butter evenly across the top.

As the cake bakes, the butter melts into the topping, creating an incredibly rich texture.

Step 6: Bake

Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the cake is set around the edges and the center is slightly gooey.

The coconut should be lightly golden.

Step 7: Cool Slightly

Allow the cake to cool for 15–20 minutes.

This helps the chocolate and coconut filling set while remaining wonderfully gooey.

Step 8: Serve

Spoon warm servings into dessert bowls.

Top with:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate drizzle
  • Extra toasted pecans
  • Toasted coconut

Enjoy while warm.

Notes

  • Use room-temperature eggs for a smoother batter.
  • Toast the pecans before using them for deeper flavor.
  • Don’t overbake—the center should remain soft and fudgy.
  • Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator.
  • Reheat individual servings for the best texture.
