Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

Start by peeling, coring, and dicing the apples into small pieces.

Place them in a bowl and toss with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.

Let the apples sit while you prepare the batter.

The cinnamon and sugar begin coating the apples, creating the sweet, fragrant filling that gives this bread its signature apple fritter flavor.

For the best results, choose firm apples that hold their shape during baking. Granny Smith provides pleasant tartness, while Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala apples create a sweeter loaf.

Fresh apples purchased during seasonal grocery deals are an excellent budget-friendly choice.

Step 2: Prepare the Bread Batter

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper, leaving some parchment hanging over the sides for easy removal.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Add vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk and sour cream.

Mix only until the ingredients are combined.

The sour cream helps create a moist, tender crumb while adding a subtle richness to the bread.

Quality mixing bowls and practical kitchenware make this step quick and easy.

Step 3: Create the Cinnamon Apple Layers

In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter.

Pour approximately half of the bread batter into the prepared loaf pan.

Add half of the cinnamon-coated apples over the batter.

Sprinkle some of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the apples.

Add the remaining batter and gently spread it into an even layer.

Finish with the remaining apples and cinnamon sugar mixture.

Use a butter knife to gently swirl the apples and cinnamon mixture into the top portion of the batter.

Don’t over-swirl. You want distinct pockets of cinnamon and apple throughout the loaf.

This layering technique creates the beautiful apple fritter-style texture that makes the bread so irresistible.

Step 4: Bake the Bread

Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven.

Bake for approximately 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean.

If the top begins browning too quickly, loosely cover the loaf with aluminum foil during the final 15 minutes.

The bread is ready when the center is set and the top is golden brown.

Allow it to cool in the pan for about 10–15 minutes before carefully transferring it to a cooling rack.

Quality loaf pans and premium cookware sets help distribute heat more evenly, reducing the chances of an undercooked center or overly browned edges.

Notes

The type of apple you use makes a noticeable difference. Firm apples generally work better because they maintain some texture during baking instead of completely dissolving into the batter.

Don’t cut the apples too large. Small pieces distribute more evenly throughout the loaf and make every slice easier to eat.

Avoid overmixing the batter after adding the flour. Too much mixing can produce a dense loaf.

Make sure the butter is softened but not melted. Creaming softened butter with sugar helps create a lighter crumb.

Allow the bread to cool before adding the glaze. If the loaf is extremely hot, the glaze may melt completely and run off instead of creating that signature sweet topping.

A reliable loaf pan is one of the most useful pieces of kitchenware for anyone who regularly bakes quick breads. If you’re upgrading your kitchen, premium cookware sets and durable baking tools are worthwhile investments.
