Cinnamon Sugar Cream Cheese Rolls – Easy, Soft, and Sweet

  • Author: twiza amys

Ingredients

Scale

This recipe makes approximately 8 rolls.

For the Rolls

  • 1 can (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar for serving
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg for extra warmth
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped pecans for a little crunch

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Baking Sheet

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.

Remove the crescent roll dough from the refrigerator when you are ready to assemble the rolls. Keeping the dough cool makes it easier to handle and helps prevent it from becoming too soft while you work.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling

Place the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl. Add 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar and the vanilla extract.

Beat the ingredients with a hand mixer or stir with a sturdy spatula until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and evenly combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure there are no lumps.

If you prefer a slightly sweeter filling, add another teaspoon of sugar. Avoid making the filling too runny, because a thick mixture is easier to spread and less likely to leak during baking.

Step 3: Fill and Roll the Dough

Unroll the crescent dough and separate it into triangles along the perforations. If you prefer a more uniform shape, press the perforations together to form a rectangle and cut it into four smaller rectangles.

Spread a thin, even layer of cream cheese filling over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Roll each piece of dough into a compact shape, gently sealing the edges where possible.

Arrange the rolls seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them to allow for expansion.

Step 4: Bake Until Golden

Bake the rolls for approximately 12–16 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden brown. Baking times may vary depending on your oven and the dough shape, so begin checking near the lower end of the range.

The exterior should look lightly crisp, while the center should be cooked through. If the rolls brown too quickly, check your oven temperature and avoid placing the baking sheet too close to the upper heating element.

Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the rolls cool for about 3–5 minutes before adding the coating.

Step 5: Add the Cinnamon Sugar Coating

In a small bowl, mix the remaining ¼ cup of granulated sugar with the ground cinnamon.

Brush the warm rolls lightly with melted butter, then sprinkle or roll them gently in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until coated. If you prefer a more delicate finish, dust the mixture over the tops instead of coating every side.

Transfer the rolls to a serving plate. Add a light dusting of powdered sugar if desired, and serve while warm for the best combination of creamy filling and sweet cinnamon flavor.

Notes

  • Soften the cream cheese: Room-temperature cream cheese blends more smoothly and is easier to spread.
  • Avoid overfilling: Too much filling can escape from the rolls during baking.
  • Seal the dough carefully: Press the seams together gently to help keep the cream cheese mixture inside.
  • Do not skip the parchment paper: It helps prevent sticky filling from adhering to the baking sheet.
  • Coat while warm: Warm rolls absorb the butter and cinnamon-sugar coating more effectively.
  • Avoid excessive butter: A light coating is enough to help the sugar stick without making the pastry greasy.
  • Check the oven early: Crescent dough can brown quickly, especially in ovens that run hot.
