Christmas Popcorn Balls – Easy Homemade Holiday Popcorn Treats

  • Author: twiza amys

Ingredients

Scale

For the Christmas Popcorn Balls:

  • 10 cups popped popcorn, preferably plain and unsalted
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 package (10 ounces) mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, optional

For the Festive Decorations:

  • 1/3 cup red and green holiday sprinkles
  • 1/4 cup red and green candy-coated chocolate pieces, optional
  • 2 tablespoons melted white chocolate, optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Popcorn

Pop enough popcorn to measure 10 cups.

You can use an air popper, stovetop popcorn maker, or plain microwave popcorn without added butter or seasoning.

Transfer the popcorn to a very large heatproof mixing bowl.

Carefully remove any unpopped kernels because they can be unpleasant to bite into and may create a choking hazard.

If you are using candy-coated chocolate pieces, set them aside for later. Keeping them out of the hot mixture helps prevent the candy coating from melting.

Step 2: Prepare the Marshmallow Mixture

Place the butter in a large saucepan over low heat.

Allow it to melt completely, stirring gently.

Add the mini marshmallows and continue stirring with a silicone spatula until they melt into a smooth, creamy mixture.

Keep the heat low to prevent the marshmallows from scorching or becoming too hard.

Once completely melted, remove the saucepan from the heat.

Stir in the vanilla extract and optional salt until combined.

Step 3: Coat the Popcorn

Pour the warm marshmallow mixture over the prepared popcorn.

Using a large silicone spatula, gently fold everything together until the popcorn is evenly coated.

Work carefully so you do not crush the popcorn too much.

Continue folding until most of the popcorn pieces have a thin, sticky coating.

If the mixture begins to cool and becomes difficult to stir, work a little faster while it is still warm and manageable.

Step 4: Add the Christmas Decorations

Allow the popcorn mixture to cool for a minute or two so it is easier to handle.

Sprinkle in some of the red and green holiday sprinkles and gently fold them into the mixture.

If using candy-coated chocolate pieces, add them when the mixture is warm rather than hot to prevent them from melting.

Reserve a few sprinkles and candy pieces for decorating the outside of the popcorn balls.

Step 5: Shape the Popcorn Balls

Lightly grease your hands with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

Take a portion of the popcorn mixture, approximately 1 cup, and gently press it into a round ball.

Do not squeeze too tightly. You want the popcorn pieces to stick together while maintaining their light, airy texture.

Repeat with the remaining mixture until you have approximately 10 to 12 popcorn balls, depending on their size.

If the mixture becomes sticky, lightly grease your hands again before shaping.

Step 6: Decorate the Popcorn Balls

While the popcorn balls are still slightly sticky, gently press the reserved red and green sprinkles onto the outside.

For an extra festive finish, drizzle melted white chocolate over each ball.

You can also add a few extra candy-coated chocolate pieces for a colorful holiday appearance.

Place each finished popcorn ball on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 7: Allow Them to Set

Let the popcorn balls rest at room temperature for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, or until they are firm enough to handle without falling apart.

Once set, arrange them in decorative cupcake liners or wrap them individually in clear cellophane bags tied with festive ribbons.

Serve immediately or package them for holiday gifting.

Notes

Use Fresh Popcorn: Freshly popped popcorn has the best flavor and texture. Avoid popcorn with too much butter or salt.

Remove Unpopped Kernels: Carefully inspect the popcorn before adding the marshmallow mixture.

Melt Marshmallows Slowly: Low heat is important. Overheating can make the marshmallow coating tough once it cools.

Work While Warm: The mixture is much easier to shape while it is still slightly warm and flexible.

Grease Your Hands: A little butter or cooking spray prevents the sticky marshmallow mixture from clinging to your fingers.

Do Not Compress Too Tightly: Gently shape the popcorn balls to keep them light and crunchy rather than dense.

Add Chocolate at the Right Time: Let the mixture cool slightly before adding candy-coated chocolates so their colors stay bright.
