Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Lightly grease a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
Set the dish aside while you prepare the pudding mixture.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the instant vanilla pudding mixes with the cold milk.
Whisk continuously for approximately 2 minutes, or until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.
Add the vanilla extract and whisk again.
Set the pudding aside for a few minutes to fully thicken.
In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
Add the powdered sugar and continue mixing until creamy and lump-free.
Gently fold the cream cheese mixture into the prepared vanilla pudding.
Mix until completely combined.
This creates an extra-creamy pudding layer with a slightly richer texture than traditional banana pudding.
Gently fold approximately 1 cup of whipped topping or freshly whipped cream into the pudding mixture.
Fold rather than aggressively stirring so the mixture stays light and fluffy.
The finished pudding mixture should be smooth, creamy, and thick enough to hold its shape.
Peel the bananas and slice them into approximately ¼-inch rounds.
Try to keep the slices relatively uniform so they distribute evenly throughout the dessert.
If preparing the bananas well in advance, toss them very lightly with a little lemon juice to slow browning.
Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Try to cover most of the surface with cookies.
You can break a few cookies into smaller pieces to fill the gaps.
Arrange a layer of sliced bananas over the vanilla wafers.
Spread the banana slices evenly so every serving contains plenty of banana.
Spoon approximately half of the creamy vanilla pudding mixture over the bananas.
Use a spatula to gently spread it into an even layer.
Make sure the pudding reaches the edges of the dish.
Add another layer of vanilla wafers.
Follow with another layer of sliced bananas.
Spread the remaining vanilla pudding mixture over the top.
Smooth the surface with a spatula.
Combine the remaining whipped topping with powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
Spread the topping evenly over the surface of the pudding.
For a more decorative finish, you can pipe small swirls of whipped cream around the edges.
Crush a few vanilla wafers and sprinkle the crumbs over the top.
Add a few fresh banana slices immediately before serving.
For an extra-indulgent version, drizzle a small amount of caramel sauce over the top.
Place the prepared dish in the preheated oven.
Bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, or until the dessert is warmed through and the top is lightly golden.
Because the pudding is already prepared, the goal is to warm and combine the layers rather than aggressively bake the pudding.
Remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool for approximately 15–20 minutes.
The dessert will continue to set as it cools.
If you prefer a chilled banana pudding texture, refrigerate it for several hours before serving.
Spoon the dessert into individual bowls.
Top each serving with whipped cream, fresh banana slices, crushed vanilla wafers, or caramel sauce.
Serve warm or chilled depending on your preference.
Notes
Use bananas that are ripe enough to be sweet but still firm enough to hold their shape. Very soft bananas can become mushy during baking.
If you are making the dessert ahead of time, wait to add the final fresh banana garnish until shortly before serving.
A small amount of lemon juice can help prevent sliced bananas from browning, but use it sparingly so it does not overpower the vanilla and banana flavors.
Vanilla wafers soften as they sit in the pudding. For a dessert with more cookie texture, add a few fresh wafers immediately before serving.
Do not overbake the dessert. The pudding is already cooked, so prolonged baking can cause the texture to become overly thick or cause the bananas to become too soft.
If you prefer a traditional chilled banana pudding texture, allow the dessert to cool completely and refrigerate it for several hours before serving.
For the best presentation, reserve some fresh banana slices, whipped cream, and crushed vanilla wafers for the final garnish.
