For the Base:
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
For the Halloween Mix-Ins:
- 1/2 cup candy eyes
- 1/2 cup orange and black sprinkles
- 1 cup Halloween-colored M&M’s
- 1/2 cup candy corn (optional)
- 1 cup mini pretzels (optional)
Instructions
- In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Add the Chex cereal to the bowl and gently stir until fully coated with the chocolate mixture.
- Transfer the coated cereal to a large zip-top bag or a clean paper grocery bag. Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake until evenly coated.
- Spread the muddy buddies out on a baking sheet or large tray to cool completely.
- Once cooled, mix in the Halloween-themed add-ins: candy eyes, sprinkles, M&M’s, candy corn, and pretzels.
- Serve in a large bowl or portion into treat bags for sharing.
Notes
- For a nut-free version, use sunflower butter or cookie butter.
- Use white chocolate and food coloring for a “monster” or “ghost” theme.
- Add crushed Oreos or chocolate graham crackers for extra crunch.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
