French Onion Chicken Bake – Cheesy Caramelized Onion Chicken Casserole

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 cup beef broth or chicken broth

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • Optional garnish: fresh parsley


Instructions

Step 1:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.

Step 2:

Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook slowly for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally until deeply caramelized.

Step 3:

Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds. Stir in broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and black pepper.

Step 4:

Place chicken breasts in the prepared baking dish. Spoon the onion mixture evenly over the chicken.

Step 5:

 

Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked and the cheese is melted and golden.

Notes

Caramelizing onions slowly is key to developing the deep, sweet flavor that makes this dish special. Avoid rushing this step.
