1 chocolate cake (homemade or box mix), baked and cooled

Chocolate Pudding Layer

2 boxes (3.9 oz each) instant chocolate pudding mix

3 cups cold milk
Creamy Layer

12 oz whipped topping (Cool Whip), thawed

Instructions
In a large bowl, whisk together the chocolate pudding mix and cold milk until thickened, about 2 minutes. Set aside to fully set.
If using cream cheese, beat it until smooth, then gently fold in the whipped topping until fully combined and fluffy. If not using cream cheese, the whipped topping can be used on its own.
In the bottom of a trifle bowl or large glass dish, add a layer of chocolate cake cubes, spreading evenly.
Spoon a thick layer of chocolate pudding over the cake, followed by a layer of whipped topping mixture. Smooth gently.
Repeat layers—cake, pudding, and cream—until all ingredients are used, finishing with a whipped topping layer. Garnish with chocolate shavings, chips, or drizzle with chocolate syrup.
